Why did you choose the School of Social Ecology?

I knew Social Ecology would give me the tools necessary to succeed after graduation. The school is known for developing interdisciplinary solutions to various social problems. For example, inequality in the education system is not a one-dimensional issue and thus requires innovative thinking. The School of Social Ecology has helped me learn how to approach complex social problems with a critical eye.

How did you grow interested in your current field of study?

After I graduated from UC Riverside, I was given an opportunity to be an AmeriCorps Fellow at a small nonprofit in Los Angeles that focused on children's literacy in Title I schools. While it was incredibly rewarding to provide reading materials to low income families, it was also disappointing to see educational disparities in my hometown. Working with these schools gave me a glimpse into the many challenges that educators and families face. The solution to this problem, like many problems we face today, requires creative and innovative thinking, which is what lead me to an MPP.

What has been your most memorable or significant experience so far at UCI?

Last spring I was a TA for a Social Ecology undergrad writing course, which was a great learning experience. The class itself is pretty demanding, but I felt supported by the professor I was working with and my fellow TAs. I enjoyed building connections with grad students from other departments.

How do you envision your degree from UCI opening doors for you or benefitting your career?

First, a degree from UC Irvine has excellent credibility and weight. Beyond that, this program has provided a depth of knowledge and exposure to professionals in my interested field. I think the connections I have made here, and the connections I will make after I leave the university, will continue to shape my way of thinking and my problem solving abilities.
