UPPP 103 Comparative Urbanization in a Developing World

Course Description - UPPP 103 - Comparative Urbanization in a Developing World, Spring 2019, Professor Seth Pipkin

What does it mean to say that the world is becoming increasingly urban? How do we begin to “look inside” individual cities to understand what drives patterns of similarity and difference that exist? This course examines contemporary patterns of urbanization to consider themes such as how cities undergo different patterns of economic and social change; how different relationships form between urban public officials and their constituents; how urban identities form; and how citizens come to have a say in and guide urban development processes. Students put these topics to work in their own projects by learning to make urban policy recommendations through the use of comparisons between cities that build insights about what works and what does not to improve urban life.
